SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A planned dredging project along South Padre Island has been canceled, according to Shoreline Management director Brandon Hill.

Hill said the project, set to start on October with the help of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was called off because there is not enough sediment to warrant dredging and make it worth the cost.

It means our waterways still have a safe depth for passing boat traffic.

Hill said it’s unclear when the next dredging will occur. He said the island uses the dredged sand to mitigate beach erosion.
