UTRGV football shines in season opener with 44-0 blowout win over UT Permian Basin
The UTRGV Vaqueros took down UTPB 44-0 in the season opener on Saturday night.
The Vaqueros shined from start to finish, taking a 23-0 lead into halftime and never looking back.
Garret Rangel and Aidan Jakobsohn split the majority of the snaps at the quarterback spot, both performing well in their respective drives. Rangel finished with 211 passing yards on 80.0% completion with one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.
Jakobson posted 180 yards through the air and a touchdown, the first of the night to Kyran Lee off a beautifully designed fake wide receiver screen.
Kyran Lee (141 receiving yards) and Corey Holmes (119 receiving yards) were also stellar in the win, carving out large roles on the offensive side during the team's Week 0 victory.
The Vaqueros defense also shined with Jordan Ford, Tyler Thomas, and Dorian Blackwell all snagging interceptions. Jaiden Haygood and Josh Cashiola also each recorded a sack.
"Proud of our guys. The way they came out, the way they played," Vaqueros head coach Travis Bush said. "We challenged our guys to come and uphold the standard they started the program with, the way we played and protect this house."
The Vaqueros next game will come on September 5th against UTSA in San Antonio. Their next home game isn't until September 19th when they host McNeese.
