Weslaco deploys water pumps ahead of expected rainfall
Weslaco, TX (KRGV) — Weslaco crews are working ahead of expected rainfall to clear storm inlets and drainage ditches across the city.
Mayor of Weslaco Adrian Gonzalez said crews are making sure everything is ready before the rain moves in.
"We have our crew checking and making sure all our storm inlets are clean," Gonzalez said.
City leaders say residents also play a part in keeping stormwater moving. The advice is to pick up grass clippings, dead brush, and any loose items around homes that could end up in the drainage system.

Gonzalez said crews have found all kinds of debris while cleaning out drainage ditches.
"You find everything, like if you see here in our drainage ditch, a lot of materials that are there flood up as water flows, but you find a lot of garbage, like tires," Gonzalez said.
The city is also placing water pumps in areas known to flood. Three pumps are positioned on Dolores Huerta Avenue, Paisano Lane, and near Business 83.
Each pump can move up to 5,000 gallons of water per minute.
"The hope is that it does not flood anymore," Gonzalez said. "That they get the water out where it needs to be, where it can flow faster so our ditches don’t overflow so it doesn’t go into anybody's home."
