WESLACO - A Hidalgo County man said he’s glad the mailboxes in his community are now secured.

Weslaco resident Walter Werden said the main door to his mailbox wouldn’t lock. He feared other people could get easy access to his mail.

“Anybody can reach in to get my mail, or the wind comes up and gets blown out of there and it’s gone. It’s not secures,” he said. “I’ve been trying to get them to put up the right mailbox, but they seemed to keep ignoring us.”

Werden said he usually doesn’t have to use a key to open the slanted box.

“The mail man can’t lock the door because it’s so flexible,” he said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the United States Post Office by email. They responded it’s the property owner's responsibility to fix the mailbox.

We tracked down the managers of the RV park in Weslaco. They said they will fix it as soon as possible.

As of news time, the door was secured.

Anyone in a similar situation can report it to their property managers or contact their local post master. Going through someone else’s mailbox or mail is illegal.
