SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Two-hundred yards of illegal gillnetting was pulled from the Rio Grande over the last few days.

The Coast Guard says eight sea turtles and five blacktip sharks were caught in it. Only three of those turtles lived and were cut loose.

The illegal gillnetting may be linked to the 63 sea turtles recently washed up on Boca Chica Beach over the weekend.

The director of Sea Turtle, Inc. says the pattern fits past cases in previous years.

Texas Game Wardens are now investigating and the Coast Guard increasing their presence.
