Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Brownsville plans to widen a temporary lane on Dennet Road after heavy rain damaged the road's edge, according to officials.

Resident Dalia Levy moved to the area in 2022 after new homes and a quiet neighborhood drew her there. She said potholes, cracks, and narrow lanes make the drive home a daily frustration.

“I think it is very unsafe, and it's not fair to the residents of this area,” Levy said. “We're subjected to potholes every single day. The street right now, as we speak, has cracks in it. There are some parts that are OK, and there are some parts that are terrible.”

Levy said she documented the conditions and reported them to the city. City staff responded to her calls, but Levy said she wants repairs to happen faster.

“They're saying, 'We're going to get to it,' but when? When are you gonna get to it? You’re taking too long. So we have to make sure that on a daily basis, the safety concerns are being addressed,” Levy said.

Brownsville Director of Engineering Carlos Lastra said drivers have no other route in and out of the area. The city said last month's heavy rain caused the road's edge to deteriorate.

Lastra said crews plan to widen the temporary lane in about a week.

“This is going to get progressively better, and eventually you'll have a brand-new road, wide and safe to travel,” Lastra said.

The project also includes a larger storm sewer pipe to help reduce flooding in nearby Tradition Estates. The city says the additional work extends the project timeline by about 50 days.

The city now lists June 2027 as its completion target. Weather could affect that schedule.

“We appreciate your patience; obey the traffic signage that's there,” Lastra said. “Take your time and pay attention to the road and the construction going on.”

When crews finish the work, the road will have a center turn lane, a 5-foot sidewalk on one side, and a 10-foot shared-use path on the other.

The city says people who encounter a problem along Dennet Road can call 956-546-4357.
