The Dallas Cowboys released quarterback Joe Milton on Monday afternoon.

The move came as Dallas claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers, who spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Milton is coming off a stellar preseason for the Cowboys, throwing for 378 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. However, his numbers last regular season were much more pedestrian. In his first season with the Cowboys, Milton threw for 183 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

The move signals that former Commanders and Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell will serve as Dak Prescott's backup this season. In his lone season as a full-time starter with Washington in 2023, he threw for nearly 4,000 yards with 21 touchdowns and a league-worst 21 interceptions.

The Cowboys also cut running back Jaydon Blue on Sunday after drafting him out of Texas in the fifth-round last spring. In Blue's rookie year, he rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown. On Monday evening, the Philadelphia Eagles claimed him on waivers.
