New fiber optic internet provider expanding web access in the Valley
A new option for internet service is coming to the Rio Grande Valley.
On Thursday, the Texas internet company Vexus Fiber announced plans to expand fiber optic broadband internet to Mission, Edinburg, and Harlingen.
Vexus Fiber officials said the company would offer up to one gigabit for residents and ten for businesses.
The new service will compete with major local internet providers, including Spectrum, AT&T, and VTX1.
While the company's $200 million expansion will offer high-speed service and cost-efficient options for nearly 175,000 people, Texas Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (D-McAllen) says legislators are working simultaneously to make internet costs more affordable in rural communities.
