Two Rio Grande Valley credit unions knocked offline by data center cooling failure

Two credit unions in Hidalgo County are dealing with a system outage that has left members unable to access their banking information.
The Edinburg Teachers Credit Union and the South Texas Federal Credit Union are both affected by a disruption to a core processor used by credit unions across the country.
South Texas Federal Credit Union CEO Francisco Rangel told Channel 5 News that cooling infrastructure at a third-party data center failed, causing the core processor to go down.
"All direct deposits and everything are here. There is nothing wrong, the only issue is that we do not know [account balances] yet, since the core system is down," Rangel said.
The failure began on Tuesday. Channel 5 News is still working to find out where the data center is located.
The core processor is not housed at either of the affected credit unions.
Members of the Edinburg Teachers Credit Union have not been able to use online banking to check statements or deposit and withdraw money. They can only use their debit cards.
McAllen resident Maria "Nelly" Garcia is a longtime South Texas Federal Credit Union member. She visited the credit union to make sure her bill payments went through.
"I don't want to pay for a returned check; I don't want to pay anything. I've never had a returned check," Garcia said.
Affected customers contacted Channel 5 News looking for answers.
"Oh my God, I've been checking every day since Tuesday," Garcia said.
There is no timeline for when the systems will be back up. Channel 5 News reached out to the third party that oversees the processors but has not heard back.
