Brownsville has a new program giving residents access to free food and essential goods, according to a news release from the office of Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz.

The Community Micro Cabinets launched Friday at Tres Ángeles Park, located at 805 E. Tyler St. The program runs on a simple idea: take what you need and leave what you can.

A second cabinet is available at La Posada Park, located at 1325 La Posada Dr.

"[We’re asking for] non-perishable foods all the way to hygienic and hygiene things that someone may need in the community," Brownsville Special Events Coordinator Brooke Esparza said.

Residents can donate unopened non-perishable food items or toiletries directly to either cabinet during regular park hours.

"The strength of our community is measured not only by how we respond during difficult times, but by how willing we are to look out for one another every day," Saenz said in a statement. "These Community Micro Cabinets are a simple but powerful example of neighbors helping neighbors. We greatly appreciate every member of our community who continues to step forward, give what they can and support those who may be going through a difficult time. When our community comes together with compassion and generosity, we remind one another that no one has to face hardship alone."
