Hidalgo County is getting more money to help local veterans fix up their homes.

The funding comes through the Hidalgo County Veteran Services Office and its Housing for Texas Heroes program. The program focuses on low-income veterans, including older and homebound veterans with missing limbs or respiratory issues. Surviving spouses also qualify.

The office said many of these homes have leaking windows and roofs, and deteriorating floors. Keeping up with home repairs gets overwhelming when money is tight and healthcare is the priority.

This September, the county is receiving an extra $100,000 to help more veterans. Last year, the county received $300,000. This year, it received $400,000 for repairs and modifications.

To qualify, veterans or surviving spouses must earn less than $40,000 a year.

Hidalgo County Veteran Services Director Samuel Perez, Jr. said he has seen firsthand how these veterans live.

"I've seen the way a lot of these veterans live. They're humble. They are not asking for assistance, but we go to Austin, and we ask for this money because we know they need the assistance," Perez said. "A lot of these veterans are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s; they've already served for us, so we need to serve for them."
