A celebration in Port Isabel is making a comeback after 41 years.

Queen Isabella Days originally started in 1974 to mark the opening of the second Queen Isabella Causeway. The city celebrated it until 1985.

Port Isabel Marketing Director Valerie Bates said city leaders decided to bring the event back as a way to draw visitors during the off-season.

"It puts us in touch with our past and what inspired people before us," Bates said.

The city also hopes the celebration builds excitement for Port Isabel's centennial in 2028.

Queen Isabella Days runs Oct. 3, 2026, through Oct. 10, 2026. Visitors can expect a car show, lucha libre, live music, and a paella contest.

Reflecting on Port Isabel's past will be a focus throughout the event. That includes a hand-blown bottle commemorating the causeway opening in 1974.

"There was also a pewter coin and a fine silver coin that was minted for the occasion of the bridge opening," Bates said.

Frank Barroso, a server at Joe's Oyster Bar, said the event is good news for local businesses.

"It's good for business because right now it's a slow season, so any event happening now brings in the people," Barroso said.
