A library in Alamo has launched a free new program for Rio Grande Valley students.

The Sgt. Fernando De La Rosa Memorial Library started a program called "Homeschool Hour" to offer hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, art and math for students ages 5 to 17.

The library created the program after parents asked for more learning options.

"Listening to the general public, especially during my summer reading program, that was one of the few things that was asked of me was to create a program that would essentially embellish or bring out more education with science, technology, math and reading," assistant library director Jessica Garcia said.

Classes run every Thursday at 2 p.m. Space is first-come, first-served.

The program is limited to 20 students per class and runs through fall and spring at no cost.
