‘All this could lead to death’: Doctor warns of alcohol poisoning after teen hospitalized during Fourth of July party in McAllen
A McAllen couple is out on bond after police say they bought alcohol that sent a 15-year-old girl to the hospital during the Fourth of July weekend.
McAllen Police Department confirmed the arrest happened Saturday at the Windsor Event Center. Jose and Jeanett Garza were arrested and each face two counts of providing alcohol to a minor in connection with the investigation.
Police say the girl was found vomiting and having trouble breathing at a party at the Windsor Event Center and was in and out of consciousness after drinking the alcohol "directly from the bottles."
Another 15-year-old was cited for underage drinking.

An emergency medical resident at South Texas Health System hospital explained the dangers of alcohol for teenagers.
"If your patients are drinking, they can also have headaches, loss of consciousness," Emergency Medical Resident Rubeliz Bolivar Barrios said. "Another important thing is they can have alcohol poisoning."
Barrios said alcohol poisoning can potentially lead to death.
"The respiratory rate is super low," Barrios said. "Sometimes, if they vomit, they [can aspirate] and could develop respiratory problems, and all this could lead to death."
Channel 5 News reviewed McAllen Police Department records and found at least five cases of minors being intoxicated with alcohol so far this year.
The department said the community has helped track these cases.
"We have seen an increase in the community reporting these types of activities," McAllen Police Department Public Information Officer John Saenz said. "Obviously, law enforcement agencies for the community have a duty to respond and act."
Saenz said the department needs to crack down on these crimes to keep children and the community safe.
"Whether it is children, minors, or full-fledged adults, their own individual acts contribute to delinquent conduct or criminal conduct in which police would have to act," Saenz said.
The McAllen Police Department also confirmed the couple is not related to the teen who was hospitalized. Channel 5 News asked about her condition but did not receive an update by the time this story aired on Monday evening.
