Cameron County is working on a master drainage plan to reduce flooding, and officials want community input to help shape it.

Engineers are reviewing data from the March 2025 Rio Grande Valley storm, including rainfall data, high-water marks, imagery and reports of flooding.

That information, along with other historical flooding data, will help engineers build models showing which homes, roads, and critical facilities could be at risk during different types of storms.

Officials say existing data doesn't always tell the whole story, which is why community input matters.

"Certain families know their community very well. They know the issues very well. And so we need to get that input," Augusto Sanchez Gonzalez, Cameron County's director of resilience and natural resources, said.

That input could help determine which flood projects get prioritized.

Engineers will rank problem areas using factors like risk to life, property damage, how often an area floods, critical facilities, and the number of people and structures affected.

The county will hold public workshops for residents to share their opinions and will post alerts on its social media and website.
