An Edinburg family is without a home after it was completely destroyed in a fire on Sunday.

The fire was reported on East Ingle Road, near FM 2812.

"Everything was already in flames. My dad was alone at the moment, my mom had just left for the store. She came and went, by the time my mom returned, her whole house was already burned," Alicia Ortiz said.

Ortiz described the heartbreaking moment her parents saw their home of more than 30 years go up in flames.

"He was out here in the shade when he saw that it started to light up and he, right away, warned my sister about it," Ortiz said.

When the Edinburg Fire Department arrived, the wooden structure was already heavily engulfed.

The wind conditions were pretty significant. We had a high wind advisory, so with all these conditions and high grass situations, we took the precautionary measure of bringing additional surrounding agencies," Edinburg Fire Department Assistant Chief Gabriel Espinoza said.

Fire departments from McAllen, Pharr, San Manuel, Elsa, and Edcouch helped to contain the fire within an hour.

Unfortunately, the home was deemed a total loss.

"The preliminary report was that the homeowner was burning trash and it got away from him. It started with some grass on fire and unfortunately, some other debris, reaching their home. On days like this, we highly recommend no burning trash," Espinoza said.

Espinoza said the elderly couple and their adult daughter were transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure for minor smoke inhalation.

Ortiz said they were all released from the hospital before 6 p.m.

While the whole family is grateful they are alive, they're also sad about what happened to their home.

"They really lost everything, they were left with nothing, without a house still nothing, all their documents, everything burned, my mom's purse. But well, they are not alone, we are going to give them the support," Ortiz said.

The family is already in contact with the American Red Cross.

The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
