NEAR PENITAS – Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies rescued more than a dozen people in the country illegally who were being held against their will.

On Tuesday around 7:15 a.m., deputies responded to a report of two males knocking on doors asking for help in the area of Tom Gil and FM 2221 near Penitas.

Upon further questioning, deputies said the two admitted they had been smuggled into the country illegally and were being kept against their will at a nearby residence.

That led officials to a house on Washington Palm Drive, which resulted in the rescue of about 18 people.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office also recovered two assault rifles and marijuana from the home, according to a press release issued out Tuesday afternoon.

The people rescued were referred to Border Patrol agents who assisted deputies at the scene.
