A more than century-old home in Brownsville is getting a new address.

Crews are moving the historic Neale House to Linear Park as part of an effort to preserve a piece of the city's past.

The house was built by former Brownsville Mayor William Neale. It has sat unoccupied for years.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley requested the house be moved off its property. The Brownsville Historical Association said it wants to preserve as much of the home's original 1800s material as possible during restoration.

"It's important for the younger generation to know how our city came to be, just because times are very different now, I think it is important to know the history of things to understand what's happening," Brownsville resident Demmy Padilla said.

There have been different ideas for what the house could eventually become, including a museum or a potential office for historic preservation.

The move from Neale Drive to Linear Park is expected to start on Tuesday between noon and 1 p.m. today and take about an hour.

Channel 5 News will be there for the relocation.
