Cameron County Sheriff's Office arrests father after 4-year-old killed by unsecured gun
Cameron County, TX (KRGV) — Authorities arrested the father of a 4-year-old boy after the child shot himself with an unsecured handgun left in the family’s vehicle, according to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office arrested the father on Oct. 14, on an arrest warrant for criminally negligent homicide. His identity is not being released at this time.
According to the sheriff's office, on Oct. 1, the boy was alone in the family’s vehicle while the parents were inside a store. Investigators learned the father left the handgun unsecured in the center console.
After reviewing statements, security camera footage and other evidence, investigators learned the boy took the handgun from the console and accidentally fired it. The gunshot hit him in the face.
Investigators first responded to Harlingen Medical Center after the parents took the boy there. The sheriff’s office urged gun owners to store and secure firearms responsibly and keep them out of reach of children and unauthorized people.
