PROGRESO – Migrants waiting the Progreso International Bridge are having to stay at the port-of-entry overnight.

Mario Flores and Erika Gallegos go to Progreso once a month to get medicine; they tell us they’ve never seen the bridge like this before.

"Some people were fortunate enough to have tents and some other people were literally just out in the open without any shelter," says Gallegos.

Customs and Border Protection sent us a statement about the migrants waiting at the port-of-entries.

It reads in part:

“Depending upon port circumstances at the time of arrival, individuals presenting without documents may need to wait in Mexico as CBP officers work to process those already within our facilities.  The number of inadmissible individuals we are able to process in a day varies based on the complexity of the cases, resources available, medical needs, translation requirements, holding/detention space, overall port volume and enforcement actions.”

Every day, people try their luck in the Rio Grande, and others eat and sleep at the port of entries waiting for their turn to seek asylum.
