La Joya is marking its 100th anniversary.

Rio Grande Valley historians say the city’s past includes a temporary shutdown during the Great Depression.

"Under the leadership of Leo J. Leo, residents petitioned the county to restart the municipality and reincorporate, leading to an election in 1965," Museum of South Texas History CEO Francisco Guajardo said.

Guajardo says the name “La Joya,” or "jewel" in English, comes from stories about a reflection on the natural lake in the city that made it look like a jewel.

Long-time resident Amancio Chapa says his family has called the area home for generations, long before the city was established.

“It means a lot for me that my family goes that far back to what is now the city of Peñitas, and the city of La Joya community," Chapa said.

Chapa says his roots go back to 1750. He says his ancestors raised livestock on a ranch in what is now considered La Joya. He said he is proud of what his city has become and hopes to see more growth in the future.

"Most of the growth is along the expressway. But that area is one of the areas in Hidalgo County that haa enough available land surrounding them for any future growth," Chapa said.

The community can share photos and memories of the city through a city Facebook group.
