At the opening press conference of training camp, the Dallas Cowboys were once again asked about extensions for their star players.

The latest in the now-annual tradition of contract negotiation questions around the team was centered around Quinnen Williams.

Dallas acquired the All-Pro defensive tackle last November from the New York Jets in exchange for a second-round pick in last April’s draft and a first-round pick next year, along with Mazi Smith.

Williams’ current contract has him signed through this season and next, but recent contract negotiations around the league for other star defensive tackles sparked talk of what the plan is for Williams’ future in Dallas.

In Tennessee, Jeffery Simmons signed a three-year extension worth $105.8 million. On Wednesday, the Eagles and defensive tackle Jalen Carter inked a four-year, $152 million deal. Amid all the pseudo frenzy of big deals for star defensive tackles, Tampa Bay’s Vita Vea has requested a trade. Attention unsurprisingly shifts to Williams, whose status as a former All-Pro and four time Pro Bowler firmly lands him among the best at his position in the league.

“We want Quinnen here the long haul,” Cowboys co-owner and Executive VP Stephen Jones said. “Obviously we’ve had a lot of resources tied up on it, and he knows what we think about him… he’s certainly one of the best in the business.”

Williams’ current deal with the Cowboys has two years and approximately $46.2 million remaining over those two seasons.
