An Edcouch man was pronounced dead after he was pulled out of the water at South Padre Island, according to a news release from the Cameron County Park Ranger Division.

According to the release, Cameron County Park Rangers responded to reports of an unresponsive man Sunday shortly after 5 p.m. at an area one mile north of County Beach Access No. 5.

The man was identified as 49-year-old Matthew Shaw. Responding park rangers and Cameron County Beach Patrol personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures.

According to the news release, witnesses said Shaw had gone out for a swim prior to the incident. Shaw was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation.
