The Edinburg Police Department is working to prevent intoxicated drivers from getting behind the wheel.

Driving while intoxicated is a problem that Lt. Ronaldo Sepulveda says the EPD sees all too often.

Sepulveda says officers do their best to spot drivers who may be under the influence by checking if vehicles stay in a single marked lane and how fast they’re going.

Municipal Court Judge Toribio “Terry” Palacios says while many people think DWIs strictly pertain to alcohol, from his experience, it can be much more than just drinking.

“A lot of DWIs [are] drug-related,” Palacios said. “That’s what we’re starting to see more or a combination of drugs and alcohol.”

Even when taken with a prescription, authorities say drugs can also result in legal trouble if the driver is left impaired.

Palacios says his job is not to say who is guilty but to keep the public safe by placing a higher bond or restrictions on the person charged with a DWI.
