The American Automobile Association (AAA) says they expect to rescue around 17,000 stranded drivers this Thanksgiving, but experts say giving your car a simple once over before you leave for the holidays can help you avoid being one of those.

Integrity Auto Repair, a mechanic shop in McAllen, says they've been pretty busy with people getting ready to leave for the holiday but say simple inspections can help keep drivers safe on the road.

"A major issue we've been seeing around here is people don't know that weather cracks in their tires can cause a blowout on the road," Co-Owner of Integrity Auto Repair Ruben Capatillo said. "And not just affect you but affect someone else too."

AAA Automotive Expert Ron Minton says it's still important not to overlook the small things, especially if the weather is cold.

"Make sure you have fully functioning wiper blades," Minton said. "If they are torn or cracked, you want to replace those."

Experts say drivers should keep an emergency kit in the vehicle, with items like a cell phone, water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a blanket.
