A Weslaco High School senior is making his mark through music, academics, and a drive to give back.

Aidan Rios is a founding member of the school's Conjunto Pantera and serves as head drum major of the Panther Corps this year.

"It's been great. We went to our first competition last year. We've taken a lot of time after school, during school, in order to make sure that our set list is amazing," Rios said.

As head drum major, Rios is working to lead the band to its first state trip in more than 30 years.

"It's always been my goal, and I feel like that's my chance to make a lasting positive impact," Rios said.

Weslaco High School Head Band Director Rodrigo Leal said the role has helped Rios grow as a leader.

"Being the head drum major this year has really just opened him up, not just to being a better speaker, but just to being an overall leader. He's taken the band to another level just because of who he is," Leal said.

At home, Rios is a source of support for his younger sisters.

"What I like to do for them is I like to be their biggest cheerleader. So whatever they're in, I'll go and I'll support them. I'll try and be the loudest voice there," Rios said.

His mother, Lizette Cuellar, said he knows how to stay on top of everything on his plate.

"He'll always come to me, and he'll be like, 'I have this to do, this to do, this to do.' He knows he needs to prioritize what he needs to do first, and he'll complete it," Cuellar said.

As a top 10 student, Rios plans to major in biology at UT-Austin.

"Well, it's always been about science for me. That's why I'm in science UIL, Science National Honor Society," Rios said.

Over the summer, Rios had the chance to shadow health professionals through the DHR Health Career Compass program. He hopes to become a doctor.

"I wanted to be a neurologist or a neurohospitalist. Those have always interested me, the brain," Rios said.

Cuellar said she is proud of his commitment to the medical field.

"I'm really proud that since he was little, you know, you hold up those first day of school signs, and on them he always put, 'anesthesiologist.' It was always some kind of medical field. I know he's changed here and there, but I know I'm super proud of him that he's choosing, you know, a medical field where he gives back to the community," Cuellar said.

Rios said his goal is to be a source of support for others.

"I really like being the net in which people can fall back on whenever they feel like they're down. So I want to be their support system," Rios said.

This fall, Channel 5 News will be highlighting 10 students who shine in and out of the classroom.

The students have already been selected.
