A La Feria Early College High School senior is wrapping up his final year with his eyes set on becoming an interventional cardiologist.

Noah Salazar is ranked second in his class and has already completed more than 10 college classes. He is on track to graduate with an associate's degree and a certification as a medical assistant.

Noah also captains the school's tennis team, which has won three straight district titles. His love for the sport started in middle school when his father encouraged him to try it out.

"I never got into football, so my dad told me to try out tennis and I picked up tennis. I remember we would go hit late at night at the tennis courts," Noah said.

He is also a member of the marching band and serves as a drill instructor for the drumline.

"Just like from the beginning too, just like tapping it off onto the stadium. Just that adrenaline rush of like going out there and making a good performance for the fans in this crowd. It's just surreal," Noah said.

His former teacher said Noah's attitude in the classroom stands out.

"Well, having a student like him just makes what I do easier. I get to talk more about the topics at hand as opposed to trying to work on his behavior because there's no problem there," Randy Resendez said.

Noah's goal to work in medicine was shaped by the people around him. His mother is a kidney specialist, and his uncle in Arkansas is an interventional cardiologist. Noah interned with his uncle over the summer.

"When he chose a career in medicine, we knew that, you know, that was the way for him to go because he's going to continue to care for patients just the way that he cares for his friends and his family," Noah’s mother, Cynthia Luna-Salazar, said.

Outside of school, Noah volunteers at local nursing homes and the Veterans Affairs Clinic. He also coaches a youth baseball team.

"For me, I'm a very loving person. So whenever I see these activities and how it warms them, it just warms my heart," Noah said.

He hopes to attend Notre Dame after graduation and credits his parents and grandparents for pushing him forward.

"My mom and dad, they've done a lot for me every single day, just pushing me. Just inspire me every day to be the best I can be," Noah said.

This fall, Channel 5 News will be highlighting 10 students who shine in and out of the classroom.
