Taylor Road is getting a major overhaul as Mission pushes through the second phase of a road expansion project worth $18.5 million.

The second phase covers a full reconstruction of Taylor Road from Business 83 to Mile 2 Road, expanding it to five lanes with sidewalks on both sides. The city says construction started earlier this year and will take about a year and a half to complete.

"We're expanding it to five lanes with sidewalks on both sides," Mission Co-Interim City Manager Juan Pablo Terrazas said. "So, it's a complex project that's going to take some time, but nonetheless, the project has been moving along very [well]."

Crews have already worked around a railroad crossing. Irrigation crossing work is coming next, which will require closing another section of Taylor Road.

The expansion is a response to years of rapid growth along the corridor. James Boyle has lived along Taylor Road since 1996 and has watched the area transform.

"From here going north, there was nothing but agriculture. And if you look at it today, well, the agriculture is pretty much gone, and everything's become more subdivisions and so forth. It's got a lot of growth," Boyle said.

That growth has brought more traffic, something Boyle notices daily.

"It can get pretty hectic, especially down here at the stop sign cause you gotta watch. They come pretty fast over that drainage ditch," he said.

Phase one of the Taylor Road expansion, which ran from the frontage road to Business 83, was completed in 2024.

The city received a grant through the Metropolitan Planning Organization using funds from the Texas Department of Transportation, covering 98% of construction costs.

For Boyle, the project is about more than fixing today's traffic problems.

"You've got to plan for the future. Don't plan five years, 10 years, or plan 20 years out. Otherwise, you'll be playing catch-up all the time," he said.

The city also hopes to begin an $18 million expansion of Inspiration Road early next year, running from the expressway to Military Road to help ease growing traffic on Mission's south side.
