The Santa Rosa Independent School District is hosting a free emergency preparedness event.

The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, at the high school gym.

The district is bringing in representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross to help inform parents and community members about flood preparedness.

Organizers will be giving away 100 free emergency kits containing essentials such as flashlights and batteries.

The effort comes after a flood hit the area about two years ago. Sandra Leal, the Santa Rosa ISD director of the ACE Program, said the district wants to make sure the community is informed and has access to resources.

"About two years ago, we did have a really disastrous flood here in Santa Rosa ISD," Leal said. "So our mission was to make sure that our parents and our community were informed and provided with all these resources."

Leal said the school district plays a central role in the community.

"As a school district here in a small community, we are the heartbeat of the community," Leal said. "We are the heartbeat of the city. So it's us being the bridge to the city."
