Twelve jurors and three alternates were selected to serve in the trial of a man charged in the 2023 shooting death of San Benito Police Lt. Milton Resendez, Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz confirmed to Channel 5 News.

Jury selection began Aug. 11 with a pool of 450 potential jurors.

The trial is now scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 5. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the suspect, Rogelio Martinez.

According to previous reports, Martinez was identified as the gunman who fatally shot San Benito Police Lt. Milton Resendez during a police chase that happened on Oct. 17, 2023.

Martinez was 18 years old when the deadly shooting happened.

Rodrigo Axel Espinosa Valdez, the alleged driver in the police chase, took a plea deal in connection with the case.
