WESLACO – The federal government announced its moving forward with plans to expand immigrant DNA sampling.

The Department of Justice says it has the authority under the DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005. The law allows law enforcement to take DNA samples from people under arrest or in government detention.

Several exemptions were carved out since the law took effect, limiting the sampling of immigrants.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr says those exemptions can be easily repealed.
