Final stretch of 16-mile Mid-Valley hike and bike trail under construction in Alamo
Alamo, TX (KRGV) — Hidalgo County Precinct 1 crews are building the last stretch of a 16-mile hike and bike trail in Alamo that will create a more continuous route through the Mid-Valley.
Construction started in March on the section off E. Crockett Avenue behind Salinas Elementary School.
The trail extends from Weslaco to San Juan.
“Safety is key to all of our routes,” bike shop owner Carlos Solis said.
Solis owns a bike repair shop in Mission and takes groups on hike and bike trails through Hidalgo County.
“Through Alamo and San Juan, and then we come back all the way here to either McAllen, or Mission, or sometimes we wind up in Edinburg,” Solis said.
Solis wants more signs on roads to alert drivers as more cyclists use the trail system across the Mid-Valley and beyond.
“If we were able to at least get some signage on the road... that'll help immensely,” Solis said.
Hidalgo County Precinct 1 says it is keeping an eye on safety.
“We have very good communication with the city of Weslaco, with the city of Donna, with the city of Alamo, and with the city of San Juan. Whenever we see something that needs to be addressed... we get into something good that is good for everybody,” Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Chief of Staff Pepe Cabeza de Vaca said.
Channel 5 News was told this portion of the trail will be completed by spring of next year.
