MERCEDES - The Mercedes Tigers intercepted a potential game-tying pass from Edcouch-Elsa late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 23-16 win in the 16-5A, Division 2 district opener for both schools.  The victory broke a series tie between the two schools and now gives Mercedes a one-game edge in the all-time ledger.  In another 16-5A, Division 2 opener, Valley View improved to 5-and-0 with a 38-7 win over Roma. Sharyland stopped Cigarroa 42-13.  In Division 1, Mission Vets won 55-37 over Porter.  Pace held off PSJA Memorial 28-24.
