A new trial date has been set for a former La Feria coach accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Jaime Carlos Guerra's trial is now scheduled for Oct. 19 after previously being set to start Monday, Sept. 14. This marks the 11th time the trial has been delayed.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson with the Cameron County District Attorney's Office said the trial was reset because Guerra's attorney was found to be "ineligible to practice law."

Guerra is facing charges of accident involving death and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the crash that killed Robin Lee Hernandez.

According to a police affidavit, Hernandez was walking on the frontage road when he was hit by a black truck on Oct. 30, 2021, and the driver sped off shortly after. 

Police say Guerra was driving the truck. Surveillance footage showed Guerra stopped briefly before taking off. He turned himself in to authorities and was indicted in connection with the crash in December 2021.

Hernandez was a United States Marine who served three tours in Iraq.

Hernandez's mother, Ginger Pointer, was not happy with the delay.

"All of the officers, troopers, the Texas Rangers have all been ready to come and testify, and they've been called off once again," Pointer said. "We just want justice for my son."

Channel 5 News looked up Guerra's attorney on Tuesday, and records show he is eligible to practice law in Texas. We reached out to the attorney for comment.
