Family of Brownsville crash victim plans to start foundation to cover funeral expenses for others
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — The family of a 24-year-old man is working to start a foundation in his honor after Brownsville police say a driver accused of being intoxicated hit and killed him on Tuesday.
Daniel Morin's family remembers him as a loving young man.
“Daniel was an amazing young man who had a bright future ahead of him. He was a loving and caring brother, son, uncle, and brother-in-law,” Rodolfo Morin, Daniel's brother, said. "There's never going to be any words that will be able to replace the hole in our hearts over a missing person that we lost."
Rodolfo Morin hopes to turn that pain into purpose. He is working to create a foundation in his brother's honor to help families facing similar tragedies.

“There's really not a lot of resources out there for when things like this happen. My 'why' after this is just building or trying to build a nonprofit or an organization, a foundation, on my brother's behalf for families that go through things similar to the one that we had,” Rodolfo Morin said.
Brownsville City Commissioner Linda Macias, who lives near the crash site, is helping the family get the foundation started. The goal is to help families cover funeral expenses.
“There are a lot of people who do not prepare, and may not have a budget or money set aside for a funeral. So when somebody's already dealing with the loss of someone, plus a financial stress on it, it's going to go a long way for families,” Macias said.
The family has no timeline yet for when the foundation will launch, but Rodolfo Morin hopes his brother's death serves as a reminder to every driver.
“Please make sure that whenever you're getting behind the wheel, make sure that you're conscious, that you're well aware of your surroundings, because you never know when it can affect someone's life,” Rodolfo Morin said.
