Harlingen, TX (KRGV) — The City of Harlingen Animal Shelter received a $10,000 grant from a nonprofit organization to buy medication to help prevent screwworm infections.

The FDA cleared the flea and tick medication as a screwworm treatment. The shelter said the medication will help treat at least 100 animals.

"It will allow us to be proactive instead of reactive in reference to the New World screwworm and make sure we prevent any spread of the screwworm if we get our first case," Harlingen Environmental Health Director Shannon Harvill said.

The grant is from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
