UTRGV football set to battle Southeastern this Saturday in Edinburg
The UTRGV football team is back home this Saturday, preparing for a matchup with #25 Southeastern Louisiana.
Last year, Southeastern finished second in the Southland Conference and posted a 7-1 conference record. UTRGV played Southeastern in its first conference game last fall and lost 45-31.
This year, the Lions are just 1-1 in conference play to start, after a surprising loss to Houston Christian in the season opener. However, an impressive showing during their non-district games has earned Southeastern a spot in this week's FCS top 25 rankings.
“They win the line of scrimmage up front, tackle well, all the details... And then defensively it's going to boil down to fundamentals and tackling. They're gonna get into big two tight end sets and they're gonna pound you and try to get to the perimeter and try to force your edges to tackle and of course use their legs of the quarterback at times and try to push the ball down the field, so they're a good solid team, they're a top 25 team and we'll see how we matchup Saturday,” Vaqueros head coach Travis Bush said.
“They're a good team, first ranked opponent we're gonna play,” UTRGV junior quarterback Aidan Jakobsohn added. “This week's all about us and we're just gonna prepare for it the best we can for this team,” Jakobsohn said.
The Lions starting quarterback Kyle Lowe comes into the game against UTRGV with an impressive five game stretch under his belt. He's thrown for 10 touchdowns and just three interceptions over the first five games while also rushing for another score.
Lowe played very well against UTRGV when the two teams matched up last season, with a season-high 214 total yards combined rushing and passing against the Vaqueros defense. He also threw for a touchdown and rushed in another score.
Kickoff for Saturday's game in Edinburg is set for 7:00 p.m. at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.
