Harlingen city leaders voted against a proposed half-cent property tax rate increase, leaving the city without an estimated $200,000 in expected revenue.

The vote happened after several community members spoke against the increase at a Wednesday public hearing. The council needed 60% of the vote to pass it, meaning four out of five commissioners had to vote yes.

Earlier this month, commissioners directed staff to build a 53.106-cent rate into their budget work. The city was looking at a roughly $72 million general fund budget, with costs including a police union contract and park improvements.

Without the additional revenue, the city may need to cut expenses or find the money elsewhere as it finalizes the budget.

Channel 5 News reached out to the city to ask whether the failed increase means leaders will have to adjust spending or find that money somewhere else. Channel 5 will keep reporting as those answers come in.
