Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez declared winner in District 34 race
Corpus Christi, TX (KRGV) — Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez led Republican Eric Flores in the District 34 Congressional race Tuesday night with more than 112,000 votes, or about 56% of the ballots, according to the Associated Press.
Unofficial results showed Flores with over 80,000 votes, or 40% of the vote.
Channel 5 News spoke with Gonzalez on Tuesday afternoon. He told Channel 5 News that this has been a challenging campaign, especially after changes to the district's boundaries.
“My team has worked very hard. We’ve left it all on the field. We’ve knocked on over 200,000 doors. We had thousands of volunteers join our movement knocking on doors and calling people to bring people to the polls,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez says the biggest concerns he's heard from voters are the rising costs of groceries, gas, and healthcare.
Gonzalez will spend election night in Corpus Christi, where he'll watch the results with his supporters.
Flores conceded the results and issued a statement on social media.
"Tonight, our campaign comes to an end. While this wasn't the outcome we prayed and worked so hard for, I walk away with my head held high, my heart full of gratitude, and my faith in God's plan stronger than ever," Flores said. "To every volunteer, supporter, donor, and family who stood alongside us, THANK YOU. You gave your time, your energy, your prayers, and your hearts to this campaign. You believed in something bigger than any one person, and I will forever be grateful for the sacrifices you made."
Hidalgo County has yet to release its unofficial election results. All results are unofficial until they’ve been certified.
