Cameron County, TX (KRGV) — The sentencing phase is underway for Rogelio Martinez after a jury convicted him in the killing of a San Benito police lieutenant.

Jurors will now decide if Martinez will receive the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

A jury convicted Martinez in early October in the 2023 shooting death of San Benito police Lt. Milton Resendez.

During opening statements, the district attorney asked jurors to sentence Martinez to death. The defense asked jurors to consider Martinez's childhood, including alleged abuse and time spent in foster care.
