Made in the 956: Edinburg native lives out Hollywood dreams
Edinburg, TX (KRGV) — An Edinburg native plans to film a movie in the Rio Grande Valley next year as he brings his Hollywood work back to where his interest in TV and film began.
Steven Escobar graduated from Edinburg High School in 1987.
“I moved out to Los Angeles in 2000 and I’ve been a television editor and an independent film producer and editor for the last 26 years,” Escobar said.
His interest in TV and film started in Edinburg.
“I found that the people who led me and taught me, they are the people who, I owe a lot of gratitude to them,” Escobar said.
After high school, Escobar went to Sam Houston State University, transferred to UTPA and finished his degree.
“I ended up transferring to UTPA, finished my degree there and I ended up working in the industry, starting with local commercials and a couple of television shows locally that kind of ended up airing across the state,” Escobar said.

He later worked with Abraham Quintanilla and Q Productions in Corpus Christi while Selena the movie was being filmed. Escobar said he made Los Angeles connections and later to the city.
“Everything from network television shows, mostly television non-fiction reality and I also produce and edit independent feature films, mostly in the horror and sci-fi genre,” Escobar said.
Escobar has worked on shows like Big Brother and The Amazing Race and his work helped land an Emmy win in 2007.
“I was privileged to work with a group of editors, where we won an Emmy for outstanding picture editing in a reality television program,” Escobar said.
Even after more than two decades in Los Angeles, he said the Valley still feels like home.
“Whenever I make a trip down to the Valley, the food is comfort food, I love coming home and having my Tex Mex food, because you can’t find that in Los Angeles,” Escobar said.
He now plans to film a movie in the Valley.
“I’m planning to film a movie sometime next year, it’s a movie about my parents, I promised my mom that I would write her story,” Escobar said.
He said the movie will also focus on his niece and will be called Sulema Stay Here.
“I want to be able to create some jobs for the local crew there and also give opportunities to local actors to be in the movie,” Escobar said.
