Edinburg, TX (KRGV) — A Hidalgo County jury found an Edinburg man guilty on five charges and sentenced him to 60 years in prison for attacking and holding his pregnant girlfriend against her will, according to a news release from the office of Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio "Terry" Palacios.

A Hidalgo County jury convicted Jorge Luis Ramos, 45, on Oct. 1, of five charges, including aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a family member with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint causing exposure to serious bodily injury, continuous violence against the family, assault of a family member with a previous conviction and assault of a pregnant person.

The case began on Dec. 3, 2024, when the Edinburg Police Department was dispatched to an apartment after neighbors reported hearing Ramos assaulting, threatening and taunting his pregnant girlfriend.

Upon arrival, officers observed the victim had severe injuries to her face and body, according to the news release.

Medical treatment later showed a fractured nose, a gash that needed eight stitches, swollen and bruised eyes, swollen and bruised lips, bruising across her body, cigarette burns and a burn on her leg that left an imprint.

The news release said an investigation revealed Ramos kept the victim inside his apartment against her will for about seven days.

The investigation also revealed Ramos assaulted the victim with his hands, feet, a knife and cigarettes.

Investigators also determined he struck her over the head with two unopened glass beer bottles, burned her with a hot stainless steel pan, kicked her in the face and doused her with alcohol in an attempt to set her on fire, according to a news release.

The court sentenced Ramos to 60 years in prison for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a family member with a deadly weapon.

The court also sentenced him to 14 years for unlawful restraint causing exposure to serious bodily injury, 20 years for continuous violence against the family, 10 years for assault of a family member with a previous conviction and 10 years for assault of a pregnant person.

The sentences will run at the same time.
