MCALLEN – A McAllen man is in custody for the attempted murder of a Palmhurst police officer, according to an arrest warrant and affidavit from the city.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS acquired documents stating the incident happened
Sunday in the 3400 block of North Taylor Road near Nolana Ave.

We went to the Palmhurst Police Department today to speak to the chief but he was unavailable.

Documents from the city of Palmhurst state a city police officer was conducting extra patrols in the area when he noticed a man slumped over in a truck parked on the side of the road with its lights on.

The officer proceeded to do a welfare check.

Documents say the officer knocked on the window with no response from the alleged driver. After several attempts, the driver lowered the window halfway. He refused to exit his truck as he attempted to conceal a gun, according to the affidavit.

The officer reportedly heard the driver make three to four attempts to chamber his weapon before hearing the sound of gunfire
come from the truck.

The driver of the truck then made for a getaway but Palmhurst police followed.

A second patrol unit arrived, helping to position the officers to stop the driver and take him into custody.

A warrant of arrest charges the driver of the vehicle with attempted capital murder of a peace officer, a first-degree felony.
