A Mission man faces up to 40 years in prison after a federal jury found him guilty of attempting to smuggle over 11 pounds of cocaine through the Falfurrias checkpoint.

Juan Pablo Ramirez was arrested on Jan. 19, 2023 after an x-ray inspection of his truck at the checkpoint led to the discovery of nearly $100,000 in cocaine, according to a Wednesday news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

During his one-day trial, Ramirez claimed he did not know drugs were in his vehicle despite his cell phone containing photos of the cocaine and cash, according to the news release.

“The jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes hours before convicting Juan Pablo Ramirez,” the news release stated.

Sentencing for Ramirez is set for October.
