Cameron County is teaming up with the city of Brownsville to fund new infrastructure in a growing area on the city's north side.

County commissioners unanimously approved joining the city's reinvestment zone Tuesday. The move is aimed at making sure there are enough places to live for the thousands of workers expected to come to the area.

The zone covers about 1,000 acres north of I-169, between Old Alice and Paredes Line Road. It is expected to be developed primarily for residential use.

Cameron County Economic Development Director Ramiro Aleman said growth from projects including SpaceX, LNG developments, and Saronic is driving the need for more housing.

"In order to work together to bring that housing, I think it's very important for the municipalities and the county to work together," Aleman said.

The county's participation is set for 25 years. During that time, 50% of the maintenance and operations portion of the county's tax increment reinvestment zone will go toward the zone.

Road and bridge and debt-service taxes are excluded from the deal. While the partnership started this year, the first year of implementation will be 2027.
