Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Brownsville is spending $450,000 on new technology to help more B-Metro buses run on time.

Fewer than half of Brownsville Metro's buses are running on time, and the city is upgrading its tracking and dispatch system.

The upgrade includes new tablets so dispatchers can quickly tell drivers about road closures, route changes, or safety concerns. The system will also help B-Metro see where buses are falling behind and what may be causing those delays.

That information could help the city make changes and get more buses running on time. Riders will also get notifications on their phones.

"Anytime there are any deviations, any alerts that we have to tell the riders, we'll do it on our system, and the rider will have it on their phone right away," B-Metro Transit Manager Simon Ortiz said.

B-Metro expects to have the new technology installed within the next two months.
