Near Drowning Incidents Prompt Warning from SPI Beach Patrol
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A young swimmer is recovering in the hospital after a near drowning incident off South Padre Island.
Cameron County Beach Patrol Chief Art Hurtado says the swimmer was unresponsive when pulled from the water.
Over the span of three days, there have been three near drowning incidents at the island and numerous rescues.
Hurtado says the surf conditions have been hazardous.
“It was a red flag conditions so that's additions and they went out further than they could've and walked off the sandbar,” said the beach patrol chief.
He’s warning beach-goers to pay attention to their surroundings.
