A parent faces charges after a weapon was found Wednesday at Aiken Elementary School, according to the Brownsville Independent School District.

The unidentified parent was charged with making a firearm accessible to a child and abandoning or endangering a child, the district said.

In a statement, Brownsville ISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy Cuff said the district police and security departments responded immediately and located and secured the weapon.

"There is no ongoing threat to the campus, and all students and staff are safe," Brownsville ISD said in a statement. "Brownsville ISD takes all safety concerns seriously and remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff."

The district is asking parents and guardians to speak with their children about the importance of school safety.
