Records: Mission woman manipulated bedridden 88-year-old woman to steal $153K from her
A Mission woman is jailed on charges of forgery and financial abuse of the elderly after stealing $153,000 from a bedridden 88-year-old woman, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Channel 5 News.
Vanessa Corpus-Trevino made the theft over a two-year period, according to the affidavit.
The crime was initially reported in February 2024 when the son of the 88-year-old woman told police that Corpus-Trevino had been taking advantage of his mother.
The man told police a physical therapist introduced Corpus-Trevino to his mother, and that the suspect began voluntarily visiting his mother’s residence and asking for money.
“Within a span of one year, Vanessa had borrowed about $100,000 from his mother,” the affidavit states, noting that the elderly woman is bedridden and has multiple medical conditions.
The son told police he noticed several CashApp transactions from his mother’s credit card that were sent to Corpus-Trevino and another individual identified in the affidavit as the suspect’s “possible spouse.”
The following month, the elderly woman told police she wanted to press charges against Corpus-Trevino after she had given her debit card to Corpus-Trevino to purchase items for her, but had learned of the unauthorized CashApp transactions.
The suspect transferred over $30,000 into her CashApp, and made out a $5,000 check to another woman while the victim was in a nursing home.
“The victim stated she is not tech-savvy and does not have internet,” the affidavit said. “The victim has no idea of how Cash App transactions work and didn't write the check.”
The victim later told police she no longer wanted to press charges against the suspect because “Vanessa promised to pay her back.”
In November 2025, the victim’s son reached out to police to report that Corpus-Trevino was still taking money from his mother, and that she also had his mother’s vehicle for the previous two months.
“He went on to say that Vanessa manipulates his mother and convinces her to lend her money; which she never pays back,” the affidavit reads. “He stated that Vanessa had wiped out his mother's savings account and that his mother's friend now has power of attorney to control what's left of the checking account.”
Police contacted Corpus-Trevino with orders to return the vehicle or face being arrested, but she replied that “she had permission from the victim to use the vehicle as long as she wanted,” a detective said in the affidavit. “Shortly after speaking to Vanessa, [I] received a call from the victim saying that I better not arrest Vanessa because she lent her the vehicle and that Vanessa had already made arrangements to pay her all the money she had borrowed.”
In February 2026, the victim called the detective to report that Corpus-Trevino was supposed to show up at her home to return her vehicle and give her a check for the $153,000 owed, but the suspect has not shown up and was not answering her phones.
The victim also told police that, in Oct. 2025, Corpus-Trevino took her to a loan agency in Palmhurst to receive a loan of over $1,200 in exchange for the title of the victim’s vehicle.
The affidavit said detectives determined no payments were made on the loan and the vehicle was sold at auction for $1,600.
“The victim stated that she never thought Vanessa would take advantage of her the way she has,” the affidavit states.
Hidalgo County jail records show Corpus-Trevino was booked on Wednesday on a $200,000 bond and remains in custody as of Friday night.
