Residents in the Las Lomas area of Rio Grande City say a round of severe weather two weeks ago left Embassy Street looking more like a river, and the road is still riddled with potholes.

Drivers on North Embassy Street near Hinojosa Street are dodging potholes left behind by the storm. The county commissioner for Precinct 4 has already hired an engineer to look into repaving that stretch of road.

Las Lomas business owner Magbiel Gonzalez said he saw the flooding firsthand when he walked out of his business on May 9. He described the street as looking more like a fast moving river.

Gonzalez said he worried about drivers trying to get through the area, and said the area is prone to flooding. He said that in early March, another storm brought water into his business through the drainage connected to a meat market.

The area falls within Starr County Precinct 4, overseen by Commissioner Hernan Garza.

"North of Doria on Embassy Street belongs to Precinct 4. That street is being engineered by Delta Engineering. We're supposed to have those plans by the end of May," Garza said.

Garza said that when the subdivision was incorporated into the city, developers connected the property by adopting Embassy Street from the railroad track all the way to Doria Street.

South of Hinojosa Street, the road falls under Rio Grande City's jurisdiction. City Manager Gilberto Millan said the city is ready to patch and pave its portion within the next few months.

"We already did partially all the way to the school... the pavement... and we'll do the rest within the next few months," Millan said.

Millan also addressed drainage and flooding issues, saying the city is working on a master drainage plan for the whole city and that it is in stage two because engineers are already looking at it.

Both the city and county are studying how to improve the road, but officials said it's too early to say when crews will actually be working on improvements.
